To “show off” or “to belong”
To “show off” or “to belong”
Last night I had my first show... Somehow it felt very familiar to me... Maybe it was all the friends showing up, the cozy "living room" like atmosphere where my pieces were displayed, maybe it was my husband running behind my little boy like crazy (who was very exited because "Momm'y pinturas are in a show")... maybe it was the cool relaxed Café, or the “far from perfect” lighting and ventilation of the room…
Maybe it was all of that combined, yet, a thought has been visiting me since last night about the value and implications of showing and sharing your art. I realize there is something else about "what are art shows for" that I didn’t know...
Honestly, during the afternoon I worried that I was going to be so nervous that my English was going to be horrible and nobody will understand me (maybe it was like that, he he).. I guess the concept I had in my mind of an art show... is this pristine, impeccable white room, with techno music, wine, cheese and fruit, and everybody dressed in black, behaving properly and very serious expecting from the artists. , HUMM, in my mind was supposed to “show-off”, like in the movies or something… I am definitely not good at that.
Instead, some kind of magical cultural and social communication was going on between ALL THE PEOPLE in that place, not only about art of course... Those kind of interactions add immensely to the community, not because of the art itself, by any means because of the featured artists, they add to the community because of the people involved re-shaping, re-interpreting, and sharing the art.
When you can SHOW AND SHARE your ideas, process, intentions, whatever people want to know, or whatever you need to tell... when that process is authentic and personal (like it was last night).., your artwork takes on a new meaning... new perspectives makes it stronger, then your artistic intentions are not alone or controlled (by you, the artist) anymore. Now it is a hybrid, a fluid, a flow of meanings, concepts and understandings, a fusion of perspectives and intentions... a new "piece of art" that is not longer yours exclusively is re-created by all, or whomever feels something around it.
This happens on online every minute, maybe it is the reason why I feel like sharing it experience here.
